Joe and Desiree
I grew up in the suburbs of Chicago with my parents and older brother, it is a small, tight-knit community. A number of homes on the street I grew up on are still occupied by the same families to this day. As kids, we raced bikes and go carts up and down the block. I played soccer and baseball at the local parks around town and I am still close to several friends I played sports with. My dad coached my baseball team and I would hope to do the same someday.
When I was a kid, I always loved to build things whether it be Legos, a ramp for my bicycle or a home addition with my dad (he was a contractor). I suppose that is how I found my path to a career in the construction industry. After high school, it felt like a natural transition.
Today at home I consider myself an adventurous guy who loves going on a motorcycle ride or enjoying just about any outdoor activity. With my wife by my side, I hope to expand our family and create more adventures together.
I grew up in Pittsburgh with my parents, two sisters and a large extended family. I am the classic middle child…an overachiever with an extra goofy side. As a kid I enjoyed playing basketball and softball and generally being outside. There was a strong emphasis on academics in in my family so I worked hard in school and thrived in many clubs and extra curricular activities. Biking, hiking and enjoying an overall healthy lifestyle (preferably outdoors) is how I like to spend my time daily.
After graduating high school, I went on to attend college in South Carolina and earn a few degrees. Along the way, I decided interior design was my path so I packed up and headed to Chicago. I have lived here now for 14 years and couldn’t imagine my life anywhere else. I am a project manager with focus in the design industry and I am absolutely loving life!
Desiree on Joe…
I think this is my favorite picture of Joe because it captures his spirit so well. Always smiling and happy to help in any way he can. He is one of the most gently, patient and giving people I have ever had the pleasure to meet. He will do anything for anybody and give it his absolute all. I am honored to call this man my husband and I cannot wait to see what an amazing father I know he will be.
Joe on Desiree…
I never thought I could find anyone in the world that would laugh at all my jokes or come along on all my adventures, but my wife Desiree does. She is one of a kind, always keeping me grounded and happy but manages to keep life so light at heart most of the time and the only hard part is when we can’t be at each other’s side as I leave for work in the morning.
This is Kona, our all-American pup! We adopted Kona from a local shelter in early 2016. She has quite the story of her own. She started out her life in the woods of Tennessee with a man and his pack of dogs. When she was rescued and brought to the Chicago area, she had never been on a leash or even in a house. With much love, patience and training, she has come a long way. She enjoys her yard, the snow, and of course chasing squirrels. But she mostly just wants to cuddle and spend as much time with us as possible! She has been a great addition to our family and we cannot imagine life without her!
Home Sweet Home
After spending 2 years looking for the house of our dreams, we finally closed on our new old home in 2015. Built in 1923, we immediately fell in love with the neighborhood and history. We moved right in and set to work making it our own.
Our neighborhood is full of new and old homes, no two houses are the same. The neighbors are just as diverse. We are surrounded by families, young and old. People have lived on our street for 30+ years! Everyone is very involved in the community and it has been a pleasure to get to know our new friends.
We found our dream home in a top Chicago suburb minutes from downtown. Some of the top-ranked Chicagoland schools are within walking distance as are many parks, forest preserves and a cute downtown area. It really is all we hoped for when searching to find the home we plan to spend the rest of our lives in.
Joe grew up in the same house his entire life while Desiree moved around as a child. It was the driving force to not just find a house, but our forever home.
Family is so very important to us. While we come from different backgrounds, the unwavering support and influence our families have is undeniable.
Desiree grew up surrounded by an extended Italian family. Gatherings are large and rather loud. Although we do not live near her family now, we make every effort to get together often, whether it is the annual beach reunion or just Sunday dinner. We relish the time spent with them all, but time with her nephew (godson) and niece is especially savored.
Joe grew up in a close-knit family of four. That family group has now expanded, but is as tight as ever. His parents still live in the same house he grew up in only 15 minutes away. And his brother’s family is just down the road. It makes it easy to spend quality time with his nephews (godsons), mostly playing Legos! We love having everyone over for family dinners often.
We have some of the best people in our corner. Over the years, these people have become family.
Whether it is the beach, hiking, foreign adventures or a road trip, you can count us in!
Sweet Home Chicago
But, no matter where we go or what we do, Chicago is home and always will be. The city is full of adventure and we take full advantage of all it has to offer. We look forward to showing our home to a little one in the very near future.
Both Joe and Desiree were raised in the Catholic faith. While our relationship with God is ever-present, our daily practice may be more modern. We tend to pray and meditate when faced with a challenge. We attend church service when the mood strikes, perhaps once or twice a month, and of course the holidays. We believe that faith is an important aspect of our lives. The traditions and values are part of our upbringing and we hope to pass these on to a child as well. Though we do plan to practice and participate in the church, it is not something that will be forced upon a child either. We hope they too find their own comfort in a relationship with God.
Before we go, we though it only fair to give you a little insight as to our reasons we are looking to adopt. For Desiree, adoption was always in the family plan. Once she met Joe, and the conversation came to family, he was quickly drawn to the idea. As we mentioned earlier, Desiree came from a large extended family. There are quite a few adoptions and fosters that help make up that network. With every addition the family grew and changed always for the better. It was an amazing experience that she wanted to share.
At the same time, we did have hopes to have a biological child as well. Unfortunately, after a few years of trying both on our own and then with medical assistance, we realized this aspect of our family plan was not in the cards. Though difficult to hear, it really changed little for us other than accelerate our plan to adopt. This all has led us to these great people at the agency, this book, and now you!
So, I guess this is where we say farewell for now. We had fun making this book and looking back at some of the memories we have shared. There were quite a few to choose from! Thank you again for taking the time. We do hope you enjoyed getting to know us a little bit in the process and look forward to what the future holds.
We hope to meet you soon…
