UPDATE: Kate and Blake are matched with a child!
Hello from our family!
Thank you so much for taking the time to learn about our family and for considering us as you make your adoption plan. We are so very excited to grow our family through adoption. It is our hope that this profile serves as a small glimpse into our lives, and that through it you see love: the love that we have for each other, the love we have for our children, and the love that we are eager to extend to our future child and their birth family.
We have always known that we would grow our family through adoption. Even from our first conversations about the plans we had for our family, we discussed how we would eventually open our home and hearts to a son or daughter through adoption. As the years have passed, that excitement has only grown and we are thrilled to embark on this journey.
Even though we have never met, we want to communicate to you how much we appreciate you, because the path you are choosing is a true act of love. We would be delighted if you were to choose us, but know that regardless of your decision we deeply respect the courageous choice you are making. We look forward to the chance to meet you and learn about your story.
Kate, Blake, Cooper and Otto
We met during college in 2003 and began dating in 2006. Our first meeting was not the stuff of fairytales – Kate told Blake that he drove like a grandpa. But, our paths kept crossing and eventually we started dating. We were drawn together by a love of exploring Chicago, a TV show called The OC, and the ability to always make each other laugh. Even during the early stages of dating, we both realized we had found “the one” and we were committed to our relationship very quickly. We got engaged in February of 2007 and were married on December 29, 2007 in Augusta, GA. Since then, we’ve added two children, lived in three cities (New York City, Nashville, and now suburban Chicago) and have had fantastic adventures all along the way.
Our love is strong and deep, because we are rooted in a foundation of respect, humility, and kindness.
About Blake (by Kate)
Blake is the greatest man I’ve ever met. From the beginning of our relationship I knew that he was incredibly special and I have loved the privilege of getting to know him. Blake and I have an ease about our relationship that we’ve had from the beginning. Whether we’re grocery shopping, going to the zoo, sitting on the couch, or taking trips together, we have the best time and each moment is full of love and laughter. Blake is kind, caring, and pours his heart and soul into loving our family. He is the most amazing dad. As soon as he walks in the door home from work he is ready to play games with the kids, take them to the park, or help me with dinner. He never complains when life gets hard and works tirelessly to make sure all of us have what we need. Our children are so lucky to have him as a dad. Blake earned his PhD from Vanderbilt in sociology. A great passion of his is learning about social inequality and he spends a lot of his free time continuing to learn about marginalized communities.
For work, he is a researcher for a nonprofit and he works to ensure the lives of children are safe. His research directly impacts children across the country! He works for an amazing organization that truly honors a positive work-life balance. In the summer he has 1/2 day Fridays – that’s when we escape to the lake! He’s proud of his work and does an amazing job providing for our family.
About Kate (by Blake)
I am constantly awed by Kate’s ability to treat everyone she meets with kindness and compassion, and it was one of the first things that attracted me to her when we met. She has a way of making people feel instantly at ease, and people trust that she cares about them. In everything she does, her kindness always shines through, and that is something I have always loved about her.
Kate is passionate about raising our kids, and works tirelessly to care for them and to provide them with wide range of experiences. She is always looking for new books to read, new crafts to do, new parks to explore, or new community activities to participate in. Our kids are lucky to have a mom that is so invested in providing them with a rich set of experiences.
She is also dedicated to teaching children. Kate earned her master’s in education in 2012 and taught 2nd and 3rd grade in the Nashville public school system – she has remained connected to many of her former students and continues to encourage them in their academic and personal pursuits. She currently teaches preschool part-time, which she enjoys because she can still be involved in education while having the flexibility to spend more time at home with the kids.
Kate is an amazing mom and partner, and I know that she will be a wonderful mother to the child who joins our family.
Cooper is very tender-hearted and smart. He really enjoys learning about animals and the world around him. His teachers describe him as friendly and a popular kid who listens to his teachers and enjoys learning. At home, he loves to read books, build with Legos, and play board games. He loves a Japanese superhero named “Ultraman” and playing basketball. His dream is to go to the Galapagos Islands one day. Cooper is the most amazing big brother and can’t wait to be a big brother to another sibling.
Otto is a spunky, fun, and good-natured toddler. He is very social and loves going to parks, the library, or anywhere he can be with other people. At home, he loves to play in his kitchen, pretend to drive, and ride his scooter. One of his favorite pastimes is singing at the top of his lungs to his favorite songs (Doc McStuffins, Curious George, Moana and The Lion King). He is really drawn to babies and enjoys playing with and holding his younger cousin Ginny. He is gentle and kind with her and will be a wonderful big brother.
We live in a fantastic neighborhood in Chicago’s western suburbs. We bought our home three years ago and have loved living here. Blake’s parents live just down the street and our kids love being able to see their amazing grandparents anytime they want.
Our Family’s Values
We believe in kindness. Our family motto is “be kind,” and we say it to our boys every day and we work to make sure they know what that means and how to live it out in their daily lives. It is important to us that they show kindness to everyone they meet.
We believe in education. Both of us have been so fortunate to grow up in families where education was encouraged, and we will do the same for all of our kids. We will work to make sure we find each child’s individual gifts and encourage their development so that they grow into the best versions of themselves.
We believe in experiencing the full diversity and richness of life. Our goal is to always be introducing our kids to new places and new experiences that expand their worldview and teach them to appreciate that we are part of a big, beautiful world and that all people deserve to be treated with dignity and respect.
We believe in celebrating our family through holidays and birthdays. Dressing up, decorating, and making each event special means a lot to us. We look forward to adding another child to our family and can’t wait to share all of our family’s special celebrations.
From the bottom our hearts, thank you. We want you to know that above all, we will love your child unconditionally and provide them with every ounce of love, safety, and joy that we can offer. We want our adopted child to always know where he or she came from, and you and your story will be an integral part of our lives going forward. Your child will be loved beyond measure by us, their brothers, our families, and our friends, and he or she will be raised with a full understanding of the selfless and courageous act of love that you chose. Thank you for considering us and know that we will be praying for you and your journey.
