2017 Segler Adoptee Scholarship

In honor of Samuel Louis Segler (1942-2000), each year the Segler family generously awards a scholarship to a Holt-Sunny Ridge domestic adoptee.

Samuel Segler was a well-respected and published high energy physicist during his lifetime, as well as a committed and beloved Holt-Sunny Ridge foster parent.

The 17th annual Segler Scholarship will be awarded to a Holt-Sunny Ridge domestic adoptee who is seeking post-high school education in a college, university, vocational or training institution.

To apply, email Linda Segler at segler6242@sbcglobal.net. Upon emailing Linda, she will send you a scholarship application, which is due July 9, 2017.

A Family by Love

Fifteen years ago, 17 girls and their adoptive families came home from China together. Today, they still get together every year to celebrate and remember the connection they all share.

“An invisible red thread connects those who are destined to meet, regardless of time, place, or circumstance. The thread may stretch or tangle, but will never break.”  — Chinese Proverb

We were a group of 34 people representing the adoption of 17 baby girls ranging from 13 months to 2 years old. Our group was an eclectic mix of ages, occupations and family compositions — there were married couples, single parents, two grandmothers, an aunt and an uncle. For some, this adoption was their family’s first child, maybe their only child. Others had older biological children and four had previously adopted daughters from China. Despite all of our differences, we had become fast friends by the time we reached Beijing.

Prior to our group leaving for China in January 2002, we had travel meetings where we all got to know each other before leaving. Our escorts from Sunny Ridge were social workers Bethanne Gennette and Julie Betts as well as Bill Li Jian Zhong who met us in China.

In July 2002, these families came together for their first reunion since coming home!

Connecting in Groups

“Stick Together.” “No hurts.”  “Have fun” (Theraplay ®). These are three very simple phrases that guide our Kids’ Connection Group at Holt-Sunny Ridge.  In July and August of 2016, eight adopted children, ages 7-11, gathered once a week for five weeks to connect, learn and have fun. The group is founded on six main components: Rules, Check-in, Band-Aids, Activity, Feeding and Closing. These concepts are adapted from both Theraplay ® and Trust-Based Relational Intervention ®. The concepts help children learn skills that meaningful relationships are built upon: the ability to give care, the ability to seek and receive care, the ability to practice autonomy and the ability to negotiate needs.

Cookies With Santa 2017

The first snowfall of the year helped us to enjoy one of our very favorite events of the holiday season — Cookies With Santa! It was truly a warm, festive time together with lots of photos, cookies, sugar-highs and laughs.

Cookies With Santa is a time-honored Sunny Ridge tradition, an event that for years and years has united the Sunny Ridge family of birth parents, adoptees and adoptive families. We are so happy to continue this event as Holt-Sunny Ridge.

Some of the little ones were celebrating their very first Christmas, and they didn’t know quite what to think of Santa! Some of the older kids were equally apprehensive, but didn’t hesitate to whisper their Christmas wishes in his ear, or even deliver to him special handwritten notes.

Thank you to everyone who braved the weather and came out to celebrate with us. We look forward to continuing this Holt-Sunny Ridge tradition for many years to come!

See photos from our time together below!

This Year End, Partner With Holt-Sunny Ridge

As 2016 winds to a close, we at Holt-Sunny Ridge reflect on the past year and the many blessings for which we are thankful. We consider ourselves so fortunate to guide and support women who are experiencing unplanned pregnancy, and to help unite children with families through adoption.

Thanks to our supporters, we have over the past year been able to provide options counseling to 132 women, place 8 children with domestic adoptive families in Illinois, contribute to the 351 children who have joined families through Holt’s international adoption programs, and offer therapy services to countless adoptees and adoptive families.

No matter through which facet of our work, our ultimate goal is to ensure a stable, loving family for every child — whether that be in a loving adoptive family, or in the loving care of a child’s birth family.

So much of our work is with women in Illinois who are experiencing unplanned pregnancy. When a woman comes to us, we are there for her as a safe, listening ear and as compassionate professionals who can provide support as she decides the best option for herself and her baby. While we can help her make an adoption plan if she so chooses, we never pressure her to choose adoption — respecting each woman and the difficult situation and decision that she is facing. We meet with her as many times as she needs us, help her get connected with other pregnancy resources in our community, and remain a source of support throughout her life. Many of the women we counsel do decide to move forward with an adoption plan for their babies — and many women also decide that parenting their children is the best decision.

Throughout this process, we offer these services to each woman free of charge — whether or not she chooses to make an adoption plan. We are only able to do this because of the generous support of people like you — people who understand our mission and decide to partner with us in our work.

As you make your year-end charitable donations, will you consider giving to Holt-Sunny Ridge? In 2017, we anticipate growing our unplanned pregnancy and adoption services throughout Chicagoland and all of Illinois, and we can’t do it without your support.

You can make your contribution online here, or if you have more questions, you can always contact our director of donor engagement, Susan Stellmacher, at susans@holtinternational.org or 630-754-4510.

Thank you for your continued support of Holt-Sunny Ridge and the women, children and families in our community.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from all of us at Holt-Sunny Ridge.
